Founded in January 1998, the MABL Foundation annually selects talented law students throughout Minnesota to receive scholarships. These law students have to demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, commitment to addressing issues affecting their community, and potential to effectuate the overall goals of the organization. At the MABL Foundation Annual Scholarship Gala, the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers and the MABL Foundation also annually recognize the recipient of the MABL Profiles in Courage Award, awarded to an individual who has demonstrated courage, excellence, and integrity in furthering the Association's mission of representing the interests of black citizens in the legal profession and judicial system.
2017 MABL Foundation Scholarship Gala on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Marriott City Center, Minneapolis
White House Correspondent April Ryan will be the keynote speaker at MABL’s upcoming Scholarship Gala being held at the Marriott City Center in Minneapolis on November 11, 2017. In addition to her role as a White House Correspondent, Ms. Ryan also serves as the Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief for American Urban Radio Networks. This year, Ms. Ryan joined CNN as a political analyst. Ms. Ryan covers urban issues where she provides unique insight into racial sensitivities and the attendant political struggles of our nation. Ms. Ryan is most recently known as the correspondent who was instructed by Sean Spicer to “stop shaking your head” while Mr. Spicer attempted to answer her question regarding how the Trump administration will revamp its image given low approval ratings. Ms. Ryan served as one of only three African Americans board members in the history of the White House Correspondents Association. She is also an esteemed member of the National Press Club. She has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Elle magazines, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Ms. Ryan received the 2017 National Association of Black Journalist’s Journalist of the Year honor and in 2015 she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her first book. She serves as a mentor to aspiring journalists, and assists in developing up and coming broadcasters.
Ms. Ryan is the award winning author of The Presidency in Black and White: My Up-Close View of Four Presidents and Race in America. Her latest book, At Mama’s Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White, explores race relations through the lessons and wisdom mothers give their children.
Ms. Ryan is a graduate of Morgan State University and a Baltimore native. She considers her greatest life’s work raising her two daughters, Ryan and Grace.
